It’s the internet phenomenon of 2010 that has got everyone very excited. Which is odd because it is such a ridiculously simple idea that you wonder why it hasn’t been done before. After all it’s just an instant messenger and two webcams so you could have done this in the nineties. ‘Nexting’ may have required a tea break in between though.
Before we go firing Chat Roulette jargon all over the shop and assuming you understand what it is all about, do check out this video by an American chap. It really is a good, realistic introduction to the site and does a better job explaining it than we could do.
So after you accept that a male (or even two males as devilishly handsome as us) is going to require a gimmick to get people to stick around and talk to you, the question is coming up with that gimmick. The best work has to belong to a Youtube user calling himself PianoChatImprov, which is exactly what he does: improvises a song on his piano about the people he meets on the site. Genius and very funny. Although nearly 3 million views in a week suggest you’ve probably seen it already.
You could look at it as a sad reflection of modern society with people commodifying each other and deciding within one second that they don’t like you and the decline of attention spans. Instead we prefer to think of it as a test of how creative can you be. So what have you got? #ep12
