WebGun - taking aim at the best of the internet

"Reviewing the best and worst of the things we find at the cutting edge of the web"

Election 2010

Who out of all the political parties in Britain would win an election if it was judged on their landing page only?
...by Matt on 13 April 2010

Of course, here at WebGun, we’re not interested in policies, we want to know how kick-ass your site is. And even more key, what does the first page the user lands at say about you?

Because in the online world if you don’t do a good job there you may not get a second chance. Getting voters is tons harder than getting someone to buy a novelty t-shirt. So we judge all the contenders and leave no room for excuses. Get your web presence right and the rest will follow. Probably…

Alliance: reminds us of an African community site.

BNP: they’ve gone less BNP and more DFS. Consists mostly of a desperately massive button they want to lure you into pressing. Don’t fall for it though kids: they want to harvest your soul.

Conservatives: a bit good. It’s a very slick operation (a bit like Cameron’s face). Good icons and a very clear visual language. Though where’s the heart?

DUP: has a logo that looks like an NFL team and covered in Times New Roman. God knows what that all means.

Green Party: looks like an Oxfam leaflet. Stop covering your stuff in seeds guys.

Labour: a scarily strong red warning alarm - intimidated us more than anything.

Liberal Party: looks broken, like someone’s host holding page. Woeful stuff.

Lib Dems: stock image of a young man and an old man (useful for when showing people visiting nursing homes). Dunno what they’re trying to do with that. Strong but a bit confused.

Plaid Cymru: sounds like you’ve just logged onto Windows. Looks like an Adobe product. Obsessed with their Facebook page.

Scottish Greens: where did you get this design from? Template.com?

Scottish Socialist Party: very activist-y. Gives the impression they’re probably gonna cause trouble and kick up a stink. Visually it’s a bit like a kebab shop flyer.

SDLP: rather nice and modern. They’ve kept it simple and clear, a great effort from a small party. Has personality and they’ve even remembered the fashionably big footer.

Sinn Fein: looks like a budget airline meets iTunes.

SNP: Alex Salmond stars as an angry detective in a new ITV drama.

UKIP: their budget pound-stretcher logo is a bit off-putting. The rest looks solid though, particularly nice icons and clickable buttons.

UUP: a confusing experience. Seems to be more interested in promoting the Tories and telling you to give blood.

All based on the sites we looked at in March 2010. We tried to remain impartial and only consider design (we do think the BNP are a bunch of tools though). #ep14
